PANI HAQ SAMITI WELCOMES YOU

Pani Haq Samiti (PHS) is a people’s campaign for Universal Access to Water. PHS members over the last decade have been actively involved in informal settlements across Mumbai towards getting water access to communities denied this right. PHS strives to educate and create public opinion to support the re-establishment of water as a common resource for the city while opposing privatisation of water supply and distribution. PHS believes every human being has a responsibility to protect and conserve water.
VISION
A world where every living being protects, conserves and equitably uses water.
MISSION
To protect the fundamental right to water by equipping people with the perspective, knowledge and skills to engage and advocate for the protection, conservation and equitable use of water as a common resource.
PHILOSOPHY
Our destiny is unequivocally interlinked with the larger ecological system of the planet. Water is the prerequisite for all forms of life on earth and hence, it is common to all. Every living being has the same natural right over water as us, humans. Since water is the source of life we strongly believe that it shall not be the subject of commodification by any means in any form. Historically, water has been used as an instrument of discrimination and exclusion by social institutions. A just and equitable society cannot be imagined without the just and equitable distribution of water. Hence, natural right to water must be protected and promoted for the full realisation of human rights. Right to water is a fundamental precondition for the realisation of all other human rights Civilizations across the world have borne and flourished along the water systems and water has been the constituent element of the same.

OUR WORK

Collaborations

PHS engages with forums on water at the state, national and international level. By collaborating with a wider network of like-minded organisations, PHS is simultaneously working towards strengthening the national discourse on the human right to water.

PHS is a part of the National Platform Against Water Privatisation (NPAWP) at the national level and the Lokabhimukh Pani Dhoran Sangharsh Manch – an alliance which is active in the state of Maharashtra.

Campaigns

PHS believes in collaboration and partnership with the community to further its objectives. PHS imparts leadership training and capacity building to sustain the movement to secure the universal right to water. Community representatives are given basic training in perspective building,  leadership development, digital literacy and governance. These have helped communities understand the functioning of the water department in MCGM to be able to deal with it in an effective manner.
